Photographs From An Urban Eye

I grew up loving nature, and I still do, but I’ve also come to love the beauty of the city. The same forces that shape the appearance of a forest shape the appearance of a street. We often characterize man-made things as breaking rather than aging. The same elegance of a drying, misshapen leaf can be found in a weathering wall. The city is our environment. The deterioration of our living space can be tragic, but it is certainly natural, and there can always be beauty found in nature.

Photography continues to amaze me. Not just that a story or an idea can be communicated in a single image, but that those stories and ideas sometimes be best appreciated from the perspective of a single moment. We exist in the present but remember as a flowing narrative. Photographs force us to view stories as details, rather than generalities. They are a kind of truth that we don’t always have the opportunity to see.
